Thanks for the interesting comment Garance. Lindley would certainly be a contender for building the menagerie; he’s an architect who deserves further research. Sadly, current circumstances do not allow archival visits, but normal service will be resumed as soon as possible!

William Lindley, a former pupil of John Carr, was said to have been the architect of Denison Hall built 1786 in Leeds for the merchant John Wilkinson, nephew to Robert Denison. In the entrance hall is an ornate plaster dome with lantern and glazing bars not unlike those used in the Menagerie at Bawtry Hall. Might it be safe to assume Lindley designed the Menagerie as well, or was there limited ‘technology’ for building glass houses at the time so they inevitable took shape in a standard form?

Last year I shared a four night stay in Landmark Trust’s Poultry Cottage with it’s own Fowl House built 1861. A note in the visitors book read – ‘The grand Fowl House could almost make one envious of being a chicken.’
