Hello Mike. Thanks for getting in touch - it’s great to hear from someone with memories of the gardens when they were productive. I didn’t know that part of the history, or that the patients in the hospital were able to enjoy such fresh produce. I hope the gardens can be saved from further decline.

Sad to see it in its current state, although I appreciate that most, without prior knowledge, would see as an almost romantic secret garden, I worked there as one of the gardeners from 1978 to 1985 when the majority of the glasshouses were still there and fully utilised, with coke fired boilers for heating in the winter, and the walled garden was also fully planted with a huge variety of crops and fruit to feed the kitchens of what was then, a geriatric hospital. There is no trace of them now, but there were also more glasshouses at the far right hand side of the walled garden (as you look at the tower from inside the garden) behind another wall with a potting shed and many large cold frames. There was also a bungalow built inside main walled garden, against the wall, down that end with the lounge window looking out over the park where the head gardener lived. We grew enough produce back then that we also supplied a couple of other hospitals. Fondly remembered days.

Well done FF for bringing it to our attention , impeccable research as usual and puts those of us who pass by such bygones to shame ! As above, puts me in mind of the Glasshouses at Luton Hoo , very dilapidated last time I went , but similarly attached to another great house now a hotel .

Hello John. It’s wonderful. And I love it all the more because it was a very rare accidental discovery. We were driving along and there it was!
