A fascinating story. I suppose ‘philanderer’ would be one way of describing the first mentioned George Durant. We could perhaps find another word to describe his activities with the mothers of his bastard children, not to mention his legal wife.

Excellent read as usual, thank you, editor. Living in Leeds I know of Tong village nearby in Bradford and in the olden days had several meals at Porters in Covent Garden – owned by the Earl of Bradford. I see it closed some time ago :
