Hello John. As you can see, our visit last year was damp, to say the least, so we had a flying visit to see the grotto again in the sunshine yesterday. And we had a good climb up to another lakeland folly, watch this space! Next time I will be checking if you have the kettle on...

Another lovely post about something near me, miles away from you! You put me to shame. And beautifully illustrated; although we do know this little building the paintings are new to me. Well placed, with a tea Room, for ascending or descending the Fairfield Horseshoe.

Good morning Hazelle. What a lovely story, and I'm pleased your mother not only got to visit the Lakes, but was also able to help you with your research. It's a wonderful spot, and great that the team at Rydal Hall warmly welcome visitors (there's a lovely tearoom overlooking the beck, which always helps!).

Thank you for this post. When I was researching my little book on follies, back in around 2000, my mother was in failing health and expressed a final wish to visit the Lake Disrict. At the time she was living near my sister in High Wycombe and my sister took her up to the Lakes for a short visit. I mentioned an interest in the little grotto hut overlooking the waterfall at Rydal Hall. Several days later I got a phone call to say she had struggled up the track to photograph it for me. It was not restored back then so I am very pleased to hear it now is. Quite a few of the semi derelict grottoes I found in my researches have now been returned to mint condition (often thanks to Lottery..funding.)
