I ALWAYS ENJOY RECEIVING FOLLY IMAGES AND HISTORY NOTES-WITH THAT IN MIND I THOUGHT YOU MAY WISH TO BE AWARE OF ONE IN CAWTHORNE NEAR CANNON HALL NR. BARNSLEY -ON THE EDGE OF DEFFER WOODS. (CANNON HALL NOW REGULARLY FEATURED ON CH4 HOME ON THE FARM ..ROB AND DAVE FARMING BROTHERS (4TH SERIES)..I USED TO LIVE AT THE NORTH LODGE TO CANNON HALL WHERE I HAD MY SUCCESFUL ART GALLERY AND OFTEN PAINTED THE BELVEDERE FOLLY IN NEARBY DEFFER WOODS., DURING 1980 TO 1991…AND OBSERVED IT’S YEARLY DECLINE. IT WAS BUILT AROUND 1750 BY THE STANHOPE FAMILY WHO OWNWED CANNON HALL AND MOST OF THE LAND -THE VEIW FROM IT IS STUNNING AND WAS BUILT THERE AS THE STANHOPE DAUGHTERS WERE PAINTERS AND USED THE LOCATION. IN 1986 I BECAME A PARISH COUNCILOUR AND RESPSENTATIVE FOR A NEW NATIONAL PILOT SCHEME FOR THE ENVIRONMENT ( C.A.R.E. community action for the rural environment) INVOLVING 13 PARISHES IN WEST BARNSLEY-FOR WHICH RURAL GRANTS WERE AVAILABLE -DESPITE THE GRANTS ONLY BE USED FOR THE MAJORIRTY OF THE COMMUNITIES THE ‘ELEMENT OF DISCOVERY ‘ ASPECT WAS ESSENTAIL TO MAINTAIN -AS THE THOUSANDS OF WALKERS THAT ANUALLY CAME TO SIT AND USE FOR SHORT STAY CONTEMPLATION -RARELY MET ANYONE ELSE THERE -AND ENJOYED THE ‘PERSONAL SPACE…THE FARMER WHO OWNED IT THE NICHOLSONS (CANNON HALL FARM) HAD NO ADVANTAGE TO SAVE IT.. -BUT TRUSTED ME TO TRY FOR GRANTS. WHICH I SUCCESFULLY DID -EMPLOYING A STONE MASON CRAFTMAN FRIEND WILL NOBLE AND A COFFIN MAKER KEITH FOR THE WOODWORK STRUCTURE.THE WORK TOOK AROUND 6 MONTHS AND COST £12.000 -CIVIC TRUST ..CARE ..CAWTHORNE PARISH COUNCIL -ALL CONTRIBUTING AND I TALKED MY FRIEND FAMOUS CRICKET UMPIRE ‘DICKIE BIRD TO DO THE OFFICIAL OPENING . AND IS NOW SECURE FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS. IT IS FEATURED IN MY BOOK ‘ PAINTINGS AND POETRY OF GRANILLE DANIEL CLARKE..I HAVE PHOTOGRAPHS ALSO SHOULD YOU WISH TO FEATURE SOMETIME.
