Many are sadly lost today, but a programme of restoration, in what is now Staunton Country Park, is bringing some of the survivors back to life. One of the loveliest of the garden ornaments is this exquisite little Shell-House.

Sir George (1781-1859) travelled to China as a child, and later became a great expert on the country during a career in the East India Service. In 1819 he bought the Leigh Park estate.

The house was then less than 20 years old, and had been extensively remodelled by local architect John Kent at the beginning of the century. The sales particulars described the surrounding park as a ‘perfect ferme ornée’, but its character would soon change as Sir George added ‘numerous objects of decoration and interest’.

James King composed A Poem on Leigh Park in 1829 extolling the virtues of the spot. The Folly Flâneuse will give just a brief taste from the near 40 pages:

The glorious strife of Art and Nature see,
Within thy Paradise, most lovely Leigh,
An art that glows with every nameless grace,
And emulates the charms of Nature’s face,
An art, O Staunton, by thy genius fired,

In 1836 a detailed prose account of the house and park was published: Notices of the Leigh Park Estate tells us that the Shell House was built in 1828, and the design was based on a print of the ancient Chichester Market Cross. Sir George used the architect Lewis Vulliamy (1791-1871) for many of the parkland structures, and the Shell House is therefore attributed to him.

The building was covered in decorative panels of knapped and coursed flint, each filled with pebbles, and inside the walls were ‘encrusted with shells’. Despite Sir George’s connections with far-off lands, these were not exotic specimens shipped home to England, but the spoils of days on the beach at nearby Hayling Island. The Shell-House was used as a museum to house Sir George’s natural history collection. The Notices gave a complete list of the contents, but to summarise there was an extensive collection of minerals, ceramics including Roman pottery and ‘Wedgewood’s designs’, and a ‘small stuffed crocodile’.

Sir George died in 1859, and his obituary recognised his career in China and his subsequent service as a politician. But the writer felt that above all the local community would remember Sir George for ‘the fact of his beautiful gardens and grounds being open to the inspection of all applicants’.

In 1861 William Henry Stone, MP for Portsmouth, purchased the estate and built a new house. In the process of remodelling he demolished one of the landscape buildings, a temple which Staunton had built to house busts and dedications honouring his friends and family. A number of the inscribed plaques were removed to the Shell-House, and hence it became known as the ‘Staunton Memorial’.

Leigh Park was requisitioned for use by the Admiralty during the Second World War. In 1946 it was purchased by Portsmouth City Council as land for new housing and a public open space, and in 1959 the house (by then a Victorian replacement) was demolished. Leigh Park was renamed Staunton Country Park in 1987, and as in Sir George’s day visitors are once more welcome to enjoy the grounds.

All but one of the wall plaques had disappeared, the shellwork was lost, and the roof had collapsed.

UPDATE APRIL 2022: The Folly Flâneuse is always pleased to receive feedback from readers who visit follies as a result of seeing them featured here. But she was particularly delighted to learn that a recent post had inspired something much more exciting than a day trip: Alan and Claire Terrill were so charmed by the recently restored Shell House that Claire challenged Alan to build a miniature version as a house for the family’s tortoises Diogenes, Loosestrife and Ephebe. Whilst the Shell House had an interior embellished with shells, Alan decided to put the his shell decoration on the outside, and when temporarily stumped by the construction of the roof, he turned to Jon Malaiperuman, conservation architect for the restoration of the Shell House, who was happy to help. Alan also decided to incorporate silhouettes of noble tortoises standing on pedestals in the blank arches on the sides, in the manner of the Temple of British Worthies at Stowe. As you can see, the tortoises are already very much at home.

This little summerhouse now belongs to Sedbergh School, which was established in the town in 1525, and their charitable foundation recently led a restoration project to restore the building for community use.

The gazebo known locally as The Pepperpot, or just Pepperpot, was an ornamental feature of the Akay estate on the edge of Sedbergh. In 1893 the estate was bought by Charles Edward Taylor, a chemist and druggist of the town, and a few years later he replaced the Georgian villa with a sprawling mansion which was confusingly known as Akay House, Hall, or Lodge, but as time passed just Akay. He also extended the existing park to create ‘delightfully disposed gardens and grounds’, and built the summerhouse just outside his garden in open pasture high above the river Rawthey. Taylor was remembered as an ‘ardent lover of nature’, and would have enjoyed the distant views from the summerhouse. He was also a great fan of the chase and the summerhouse would have provided views of the Sedbergh Hounds, of which he was ‘the popular master’, in action.

In 1897 John Hutton (1866-1937) of Kendal designed a new entrance lodge for the estate, and he was the ‘Architect & Surveyor’ to whom enquiries were to be addressed when the estate later came on the market. With these connections, Hutton may also have designed the mansion and summerhouse, although no evidence appears to survive. The summerhouse is not marked on the 6″ or 25″ Ordnance Survey maps which were revised in 1909-1912, so it was probably built soon after the latter date.

Taylor died in 1924, and once his affairs were settled the Akay estate was offered for sale in 1926. In the particulars, what became known as Pepperpot was described as a ‘stone-built two-storey Summerhouse … providing fine views’. There was little interest from potential purchasers for a decade, until in 1936 the governors of Sedbergh School agreed a deal to buy the property. Sadly their plans for the mansion did not come to fruition and in 1938 the governors decided that the ‘whole of the interior and exterior fixtures and fittings’ were to be sold at auction. The house was then demolished, and the gardens and summerhouse largely abandoned.

In 1948 a curious cow took advantage of the open door and wandered up the stairs to admire the view. Mr Greasley, a local man, was passing and captured the image which was then published in the local paper, the Westmorland Gazette. It was reported that it took five men with ropes to manoeuvre the animal back down to the field, and the tower was then locked up to prevent any further bovine belvedere bravado. Sadly, the tower was then allowed to become derelict, and over the next few decades the upper storey collapsed, leaving a sad single-storey shell.

In Spring 2015 the Heritage Lottery Fund awarded Sedbergh School Foundation a grant of £76,300 to restore the structure, on the basis that it would then be available for use by the local community. Further funding came from the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority.

There is a local tale that the summerhouse was built for Taylor’s daughter Elizabeth Annie, born in 1889, who is said to have had tuberculosis and needed to live in isolation in Pepperpot between the age of 18 and her death aged 21. Happily this is just a story, and Elizabeth Annie married John Marmaduke Conder, of nearby Birks House, in 1913 and lived well into her 80s.

The Pepperpot can be visited from public footpaths, but please respect the local community and wait until the coronavirus is under control. Find out more about Sedbergh here https://www.sedbergh.org.uk/activities/

This post expands on earlier research by the late, and greatly missed, Helen Lazenby.

But only a few miles away from Studley’s shops and scones is Hackfall, a tranquil vale* which is sublime, romantic and wild – and totally devoid of facilities. Both were created in the 18th century by the Aislabie family of Studley.

Hackfall was created in woodland on the bank of the river Ure and was dotted with follies, each with vistas – to the river, to Masham church spire, or to the other ornamental buildings. There was no house at Hackfall, as it was a pleasure ground that could easily be reached by carriage from Studley, and as one contemporary postulated: ‘It is experimentally known that a long residence, even in the most romantic scenes, is apt to cloy: so the owner wisely has prevented all risk of satiety, by adapting his edifices to a visit only of a few hours.’

Today you have to visit the Village Hall in nearby Grewelthorpe for (excellent) refreshments, but in the 18th century Hackfall’s pavilions and alcoves provided shelter where light meals could be taken. If something grander were required, two of the follies had detached kitchens in which meals could be prepared. The remains of that by Mowbray Point, high above the valley, can still be seen.

The second kitchen, now lost, serviced Fisher’s Hall – one of The Folly Flâneuse’s favourite buildings. The ‘rotund room in which the family often dine’ was thatched in 1749 and completed in 1750 – a stone above the entrance bears that date and the initials of William Aislabie. It was lined with ‘that sort of stone which is commonly called petrifyed moss and roots which they dig near it’, and thatched with ling (heather). Guests sat at a horseshoe shaped table inside the octagon, from which there were ‘the finest and most picturesque views’, through the pointed gothic windows and door.

Hackfall soon became very popular and the earliest tourists (only the rich and influential were able to take tours at this date) could gain admission by calling at a cottage where the gardener, a Mr Hardcastle, would show them around. One visitor was moved to write some lines, and in this extract imagines the rustic summerhouse as a hermit’s retreat:

Fast by this stream, and in the thickest shade,
A straw-roofed cot appears with ivy bound,
The walls with cells and vary’d moss overlaid,
And rough-hewn altars mark’d the hallow’d ground.

Here haply dwells some hoary-headed seer,
Far from the guilty clouds’ tumultuous din,
Here lost in soft musings wears the silent year,
Estrang’d alike to passion and to sin.

The reality was that you were far more likely to bump into elegant travellers having ‘PicNic parties’ – in 1786 one visitor was delighted to bump into William Wilberforce drinking tea.

The inns in the closet towns of Harrogate and Ripon arranged transport by carriage to Hackfall, and stabling was provided both inside and outside of the grounds. However, it’s not clear how many visitors took their lead from The Hon. Miss Cust who arrived by donkey in 1840.

The woodland garden remained a favourite destination throughout the 19th century. By this date visitors taking tea at the Mowbray Point ‘refreshment house’ had another attraction to enjoy, Hackfall being ‘celebrated for its cream cheese’. With the advent of the motor engine further visitors arrived by car and Groups by charabanc.

Descendants of the Aislabies sold the pleasure ground in the 1930s. Hackfall was forgotten, and fell into disrepair as the 20th century progressed: the buildings became ruined, paths became overgrown and the trees were felled. In the 1980s the Hackfall Trust was formed, and it worked with the Woodland Trust and the local community and councils to halt further damage. Grants from various bodies, especially the Heritage Lottery Fund, allowed the partial restoration of Hackfall during the 1990s and the first decade of the current century. Fisher’s Hall and the other abandoned structures were consolidated to ensure their survival, whilst Mowbray Point, the banqueting house overlooking the woods and river, was beautifully restored by the Landmark Trust as a holiday let, now called The Ruin.
