Hello Byron. I too would prefer to see the tower remain as a romantic ruin, although preferably one that is not allowed to deteriorate any further. Sadly the owner died earlier this year, so I am not sure what the future holds for the folly.

I just spotted this on the way to West Marden after not living down south for a while. Silly thing is I must have driven past this pretty much every day for 3 years and had no idea it was there until now. Thanks so much for the write up, very interesting to learn its history. While I appreciate the current owner's intentions, sometimes the romantic appeal of these things takes precedence. I'm sure Mr Walpole would approve had he lived another 300 years!

Good morning Iain. I'd love to have seen the buzzards flying over, what a magnificent sight that must have been. Judging by the litter at the folly I'd say teenagers still enjoy an illicit drink and smoke at the tower. I hope they appreciate their very superior 'den'.

I've been there many times, sometimes disturbing a pair of buzzards, but a member of Gill's family used to go there regularly as a teenager to drink and smoke with his friends. The tower's owner, Mark Talbot lives quite near me in Putney in an interesting street. I must call on him and tell him about your article.

Wouldn’t Racton have looked wonderful - maybe one day someone will restore it to its former glory! Yes, ‘Follies’ and its revised reprint, certainly sets the bar, but you provide the detail that couldn’t be included for obvious reasons. There is of course Barbara Jones’s book ‘Follies and Grottoes’ with its wonderful illustrations, which pre-dates this and, pre-eBay, it was hard to locate. I remember, as a student, being terribly excited when l found a copy in the bookshop of the Architectural Association and parting with £20, which for me at that time, was quite a sum, but l felt l had found The Holy Grail and it was money well spent!

Hello James, and thank you for your kind comments. I love Racton Tower as a ruin, but I’d also like to have seen it in its original ornate form. Thanks also for mentioning Gwyn and Wim: if I hadn’t discovered their first book this website would not exist today.

How much l enjoy your Saturday musings, nay more than musings, wonderfully researched and detailed articles, which act as a detailed addendum to Gwyn and Wim’s ‘Follies’. I marvel at your attention to detail, especially where architectural drawings and pictures are concerned and this article on the Racton Tower, which is near where l live, encourages me to see it in a different light as it was obviously once a fine structure and deserves better (maybe a project for ‘Grand Designs’)
Thank you so much again for delighting and informing us in so many ways and pray, continue!

Once again you’ve spoilt my Saturday. I couldn’t wait to read what new excitements you’d uncovered for one of my favourite follies of all, and to see what unseen images you’d found. I was not disappointed. Another epic piece with amazing pictures, and now all I have to look forward to on Saturday morning is bacon and eggs.
