In about 1946 aged 10 my famly took me to Keppel’s column. Someone dropped a brick from the top which hit the square base and shattered. A fragment presumably struck some one on the head and I vividly remember my father, who was walking by, bending to clean grey material from his fingers on the grass. I presume someone was killed by a catastrophic head injury. I think the day was bank holiday Monday in May which is why the site was busy. I overheard a conversation afterwards about two lads coming down from the column as white as sheets. Does anyone have more details?
