Thank you for all the information about The Hospice on Hampstead Fell. My partner and I have just started the walks in Alfred Wainwright’s book “Outlying Fells”, and of course this tower was mentioned on this walk. A quick search on Google brought me to your very interesting website and I’ve subscribed!

I attended Charney Hall School, located high on the hill where the houses of Charney Court were built soon after the school’s closure in 1973 and its subsequent demolition. Hampsfell and the Hospice were part of our lives being one of our frequent walks in the area. The views of the Lakeland Mountains and the sands of Morecambe Bay must have inspired 1000s of boys over the years since 1882. Today the Hospice has changed little since I was there at school in 1958. Some would say that’s a bad thing but to me this illustrates that there is a slower beat to life, one that is more in tune with the planet, one that is indifferent to all the wars and the fads and fashions of humanity. This is indeed a special place, one that once experienced will never be forgotten.

My grandparents lived in Grange for many years and when l visited, l often walked up to the hospice. Marvellous views. Sadly l am no longer able to visit but the memories live on.

Thanks for introducing me to this lovely place which I visited yesterday in glorious July sunshine. The viewfinder was fully operational and the frying pan available for a fry up which I did not need.

We also explored the Priory on our last visit (Remington oversaw the restoration), which we hadn't done for many years. I know the little tower, probably also by Remington, but it keeps its secrets well.

I was only introduced to this building, and Hampsfell, about three years ago, but have visited it several times since (usually followed by lunch in Cartmel!). Lovely to know something about the building, the Greek inscription had puzzled me. There is another lonely tower lower down the fell just to the west of the Hospice…..
