Hello Simon. We must have just missed each other as we were also at that open garden event. We too wandered off to find the folly, but were lucky enough to get chatting to the farmer who gave us directions and permission.

We visited Azerley Chase in July when it opened as part of NGS, prompted by mention of "a folly' in the description. I assumed that would be the Tower you so interestingly describe. Sadly not, it was a modern metal seat in a landscape needing TLC. But there was a 3-storey stone tower adjacent to the house although not open. Maybe the two towers would have been able to see one another when there were less trees? I have photos.
We then went in search of the"real" tower but soon realised we would have been trespassing to reach despite glimpses through trees. So it was great to finally see photos of the elusive tower.
